This stoneware piece is 4.5" high. The glaze is black and brown with a blue drip decoration at the neck. The seller described it as a vase but I don't think it is. Better images coming soon.
One of the interesting things about this piece is the prominent label on the side of the piece which mentions a Japanese kiln (Tsukamoto) and a Japanese/American importer (Takahashi). Although, not a secret that Takahashi attributed and sold kiln marked Japanese pottery, it interesting to see a labeled piece like this. It is the only one like it that I have seen. The label also mentions that the pottery is "Non-Toxic" which leads me to believe that it is not meant to be used as a vase as the seller thought, but for some other purpose. It is a bit short for a tokkuri, sake flask, but it would work very well for that purpose, or perhaps as a condiment holder.
I posted an earlier piece, a ginger jar, whose Japanese origins are ambiguous, also imported by Takahashi, which includes a bit of history about the importer and several links to more information about them. Takahashi imported Japanese pottery is still very commonly found, even though they went out of business almost 30 years ago. I also did a post for some Tsukamoto Mashiko ware which contains some information about the kiln and also links to more information.
This piece is labeled:
"Made in Japan
TSUKAMOTO MASHIKO POTTERY
FOR
TAKAHASHI
SAN FRANCISCO. CA., 94103.
NON-TOXIC POTTERY"
