This is the first of 4 Boy Scout merit badge books I picked up recently. This was first printed in 1965, this is the 1972 edition. Pretty much the same with a few revisions. It was 45 cents at JCPenny. This is the one for Lifesaving.
Looking through it the preferred methods involved tossing rope or going out in a boat or other methods that do not involve getting in the water with someone who is drowning. Eventually it works up to jumping in the water and rescuing someone.. Might not be safest thing to do to have children rescuing people but it seems to have worked out. They are probably supposed to dial 911 on their phones while and going live on Facebook with the video.
I found the inflating of the clothing to be an interesting method. It is something I never would have thought of. I do know the part about taking off your shoes.
Wrapping it up is the merit badge counselor. Even if he is wearing a bowtie.
