S.S. Iowa 1872 - 1915 (Goodrich Transit Line ) - artifact spoon
Fifty plus years ago I was an avid SCUBA diver in Lake Michigan - the entire western shoreline. This preceded the current shipwreck conversation laws. "Treasure" was to be found in the sand around the wreck site. The wreck of the Iowa was not far off-shore of Chicago in 20'-25' depth and on a dive I found this metal spoon with the Goodrich Line imprint. Silver plate would have been typical for these passenger ships.
In this case: "Trying to take advantage of a midwinter thaw to haul a valuable cargo, she was caught in the ice in a refreeze and crushed. Her single passenger and her crew were able to walk ashore." Gothro Phil
As I begin to reduce my collections, I'll probably call around and find a home for this in one of our local historical collections.
Great story and find. A piece of history..
