The story goes that my husband's grandpa rescued this desk. It appears to be of very fine quality. Can anyone tell me anything else about it?

I love the barley twist legs and all 4 to boot ! Almost appears Irish !~
This is not barley twist. BT legs would look like a snake wrapped around a pole.
This style is called a spool furniture in the US. The style has its origins in the UK in the late 17th century.
It was a very popular in the US, Victorian era; and although I cannot see enough construction details to make a conclusive decision, your piece appears to date from that era.
It is often called "jenny lind furniture" and you will find a lot of examples searching for that or "spool furniture/ leg".
Suspect your piece is walnut, but the grain is not visible enough to confirm.

Thank you all for your interest and the information. I believe that it is walnut. Does anyone have suggestions on how I should find it a good home? It is tucked away in a corner here and not appreciated as it should be.
omg, I actually want it so bad
It's beautiful! I have a complete bedroom suit from the 1940's made by Willett Furniture in Louisville, KY. It's called Wildwood Cherry Rope Twist and this appears to be nearly identical to the suit that I have.
