Do you like English 'crockery', as my sister called it? I do! I recently received this from my niece. It originally belonged to my mother. It is a Mintons cake plate in a well known pattern. The mark on the back and impressed date mark I believe date this to 1890. I was surprised there was no Mintons category under English china manufacturers.

its not an exotic bird see shaskespeare and it,s not a feng huang they are sacred in china only for export they adapt for export they leave out the color yellow , the other exception is milk and blood which is also export, and the monoclored
they combined a Kangxi chalkrock with an Yongzheng pattern

Apostata, Many thanks for your insightful historical comments and the Shakespeare quote. I appreciate the history! It is true the cockatrice is not an Asian device, it's English. But isn't that the cute thing about the British potters? They didn't just copy one Chinese design, they mashed up a couple of them, threw in their mythical dragon bird in a cultural admiration, so the everyday bloke could have that exotic aesthetic at home without the expense of travel or importing the genuine. Although, this pattern was called cockatrice in the 20th century the bird doesn't look like the heraldic icon, does it?:)
