This was a gift to myself (well, my collection to be exact) that arrived on Christmas Eve. Of course I have to share it with all my CW friends as well...for who doesn't like a nice, quirky piece of Victorian art glass?
This iconic three - ball footed vase by Welz is made from cased glass - opaque yellow with an orange interior. It measures around 12.5 cm tall, 14.5 cm across the crimped top rim, & 9 cm across the base.
There is a clear crest on the three - way crimped top rim as well - because, when you're this fancy, why not add a touch more fancy for good measure?
Hope this one makes you smile as much as it did for me...& Merry Christmas, folks, whoever you are & whatever you're doing...& just make the best of what you've got!
It's unique and quite beautiful! Everyone should gift themselves every once in a while. Merry Christmas IronLace!!!
Much appreciated, jscott0363, & a Merry Christmas to you, too!
Being a hardcore collector I have a permanent "license to self - gift" on a regular basis...because life's too short not to have more nice stuff when you can get it, that's what I reckon!
Great piece of glass and your philosophy is spot on. Merry Christmas.
Many thanks, artfoot, & likewise to you!
Wonderful example of Welz, Marin. One foot in Art Deco, the décor and one foot in Victoriana, the rim crimp and crest(?). You have to love the sheer exuberance of it too.
Merry Christmas Marin!!
A really special one! Merrt Christmas
MERRY Christmas!!
Wow gorgeous ! Merry Christmas
Peggy knows my feelings on these.
Yes I'm a big girl, seen lost of stuff, and I like the colours here, but the balls are way too scrote like for me!! Sorry.
I know you won't be offended Marin, probably just tell me to get over myself lol. :)))))
The first one I ever saw was posted by Marty Hoenig and resulted in several veiled comments along those lines. So you are not alone Karen :)
Many thanks, Peggy, & as you well know, a nice piece of Welz is always a treat!
Thanks so much, Michelle & the same wishes to you too!
Thanks also, VioletOrange & the same to you!
Thanks so much, Manikin! Festive greetings to you too!
LOL Karen, I was waiting for someone to have a visceral response to the rather suggestive appearance of this! Out of a couple of other Welz three - ball vases in my collection, this one is the most "prominent". When I unwrapped it I was quite overwhelmed by how well - endowed it was! It works on all kinds of levels for me - funky, weird, hilarious, & exuberantly odd. Oddball, in fact!
Balls aside, to me is it also redolent of another way of being - a truly queer intersection of symbolic elements, rather like the flagrant natural design seen in flowers & fruit...
Peggy, I like to refer to certain suggestive, ambiguous things as a "magic flower". This is a prime example of the species & a wonderful illustration of how art can mirror the polymorphous extravagance of natural forms...
It's a balance I think, these balls in glass, and the very feminine jack in the pulpit.
We need a vase with both just to keep the world real.
Thanks for all of your great posts this year Marin, I am so happy your life has settled to a better place. You are a bit of a hero to me with how you have managed life's travails, and keep showing us how courageous we should all be.
Karen, I'm simply knocked out that you'd think of me as some kind of hero...wow!
This season is for many a time of reflection, & when I think back to my situation this time three years ago, I wouldn't have believed how things would turn out. On a global scale, this has been a strange & unimaginably horrendous year. For me, on a minute, personal scale, 2017 - 18 was to me in its own way, a time of life - changing disruption & upheaval. I was (& still am) so incredibly fortunate to have found a small, yet powerful light within to keep me going when things were falling apart. The intense gratitude remains...& I feel almost ashamed to admit that I've made it through this monumental year unscathed. And thus, I find myself willingly responsible to share that inner light, & broadcast as much positivity as is humanly possible! :-)
Marin, I loved your response to Karen; it was very touching, and I am so glad there are people like you in the world. I wish you a very happy 2021!
Thanks so much for your kind words, Michelle!
Wishing you just the same for the coming year, too!
From the looks of this piece it seems that your holiday was excellent. This is so beautiful and eccentric in the different shapes used, I love the colors, ruffle and all.
I hope that your season brings you many joys. Lori
Marin,
I agree totally with the comments above. Only.....
I wish I could put down in words the thoughts as exquisitely as Karen has above;
you are an inspiration to me, I wish the very best in your life.
Your post are cherished. Lori
Thanks so much, Lori, that is so kind of you to say, & your supportive words are greatly appreciated!
In the past, I could have not imagined being an inspiration to anyone...& the idea still takes me by surprise!
