A bit of interest, I hope, to some, heres my old copy of Copperfield and Bleak House, by Chapmans... made up of parts, with printed Dickens’s Works Household Edition before the bound instalments part spear holes, and quite a few printing errors....along with some of the usual first edition errors.. (elgble, chair etc..), which I guess they never changed. I’m no expert in old books btw.

But what I like in my book are the ink fingerprints on some pages, as it gives a feel of use, and also the printing errors are great, chapters and picture not in their index place, sentences finishing early, paragraphs that’s never end that get me out of breath reading them..... it’s nice and feels perfect for Victorian London to me.

I even found a pencil written note inside mentioning Peggotty’s Cottage, Betsey and things in her house, showing me someone was using the book, and there’s a name in blue ink on the front cover “G M Thorne” maybe the original owner who had the parts bound.... I’ll never know.

A once prized possession Id say, even with all its flaws .....but to me it’s wonderful, as it all adds to it’s enjoyment of reading these great novels of Dickens’s Works, in such an original way.

Hope you all like it...and don’t mind my sharing it with you.

Regards from a not foggy London!

Did you look here to see if you can find one like yours ... nice find by the way I have a few Dickens,,smiling https://www.abebooks.com/servlet/SearchResults?bsi=30&sortby=1&tn=%20Bleak%20House&prevpage=1

Hi, thank you for your comments.... I looked on abe and a few others, and I just can’t find anything listed with all the errors I have.

Someone has suggested it might be a printers or editors copy, if I could post more pictures on here I would.

I was able to run comparisons on text through the download Gutenberg version and the original versions and whilst I have many of the first point errors in both, I’m hoping to find if someone in the world has the same other typos’, upside down pictures and inner fold margin wording etc.. like my versions.

Thank you again for commenting... and if I ever find out more I will post it up here.

      All the best.

      MartinRye,
Well glad I could help a little, sounds like the folk that bound the book screw up putting it together by hand or machine ,..I didn't look for your book on Abe's but I knew you would find a copy with out the mistakes ....plus you left out the date it was published ..you can do a part 2 on another post here even a part 3 smiling ..does it make it worth more then a copy that's right .. to some , could be they had no proof reads that day ...lol
best of luck ,hope you find your answers...
stay safe,. and keep us up to date on it ..later

HI thank you again, publish date on copperfield is 1870, but that’s a glued in page not bound in from what I can see, Bleak House is I guess the same although there is actually no date save for “In August 1853 “on the preface... but the pictures for both by Bernard were published in 1870.

like you said, maybe the reader had the day off when this was going through the print room, value wise... I wouldn’t know... all I’m hoping to find is another one just like it mistake wise etc.. so I can get a term of reference..etc..

I’ll update as I find more, and thanks for the tip about being able to create further posts on the same item.... that’s really useful to know.

      All the best

      That's great , the original was done it part's ,,, here's a snip I came across..

      Original publication

Like most Dickens novels, Bleak House was published in 20 monthly instalments, each containing 32 pages of text and two illustrations by Phiz (the last two being published together as a double issue). Each cost one shilling, except for the final double issue, which cost two shillings.
      Instalment Date of publication Chapters
      I March 1852 1–4
      II April 1852 5–7
      III May 1852 8–10
      IV June 1852 11–13
      V July 1852 14–16
      VI August 1852 17–19
      VII September 1852 20–22
      VIII October 1852 23–25
      IX November 1852 26–29
      X December 1852 30–32
      XI January 1853 33–35
      XII February 1853 36–38
      XIII March 1853 39–42
      XIV April 1853 43–46
      XV May 1853 47–49
      XVI June 1853 50–53
      XVII July 1853 54–56
      XVIII August 1853 57–59
      XIX–XX September 1853 60–6
unless I missed it you didn't say who who printed it ...? ok later time for work ....lol

lol one more thing I was thinking about when I was getting ready to head out ...I' m book collect of Roycroft books ..and in my collection I have some books by them where they would have booklets all about the shop that never sold.. So Hubbard learned form a fellow he worked for by the name of Orange Flower's who own The Arena publishing Co. back around 1890's which I have a couple of his books as well ..anyways they would take the booklets and bind 5 - 10 booklet and make a book out of them rather then trash them .. end result for Roycrofts would be there bound copies of The Philistine ..which I have 30 or so books of ...just food for thought...lol have a great day

      Hi
That’s really interesting points, makes you wonder....I thought the bind style would give me some clues, but that looks about 1850s too... by 1870 they were using a green cloth cover from what I read via your sign posting to links, an owner would be collecting the volumes and sending them off to be bound up.

The publisher is chapman, printer is virtue ...if I could figure out the note I’d narrow it down..looks like a case of reading the books and comparing against the online versions.

Thanks for your great help, and have a good start to the week...

      All the best.

lol Back from The PO ..and covering the tractor for the next storm we have cumming ...well ya that's part of the picture ,,..but if you look at 1870's the market started to crash then ,,.. all around the world which meant cutting labor cost and letting the high end workers go and employing your family try to learn and fill in jobs like cutting the paper to size .which your book show signs of some say a half ass job or lack of care or low level skill...I could go on but with out holding and looking at the book and only the one picture posted ,..it anyone guess..and if you think the note is by Dickens to to match it up to his letters .. here https://www.google.com/search?sxsrf=ALeKk02moMsEGo90IYu2CihzLncpt1Odkg:1612197118621&source=univ&tbm=isch&q=handwriting+letters+by+charles+dickens&sa=X&ved=2ahUKEwjZk8CkjsnuAhXTGVkFHRJMAI8QjJkEegQIBxAB&biw=1280&bih=644 and remember one thing of my words that is ...if its a one of a kind ,.. you'll have a hell of a time fixing a price to it cause you have to have someone who wants to buy it and is willing to buy it at your price .. I have a few myself..lol this is my last words on this ,,..best of luck my friend
