Unusual "Horse and rider" effigy. The purpose is unknown. Perhaps these blacksmith made effigies were intended to protect farms from pillaging by Indians. Perhaps they provided protection from Hessian Grenadiers hired by the English from the French and Indian War through the Revolution. In any case, these artifacts show careful forging and clearly they were important. Note the Phryingian headwear. Knitted caps were symbols for freedom. These effigies may relate to the "Sons of Liberty" active during the Revolutionary war . Similar carvings of the face and cap appear on some Lehigh County , Pa. flint lock rifles. (Guns made by Rupp and Moll are examples.)

I’m confused by the title stating it from “16th century”.......that means it was made some time between 1501 and 1600.
How are you determining it’s age? I’m just curious.

great effigy, I have a few myself. Early farmers and homesteaders here i Pennsylvania kept them on the barn window sills to ward off evil spirits.
