      It has 1898 on it

I think you are correct that it is a NY City souvenir item.

Don't know why it has the 1898 date on the one side. Both the Empire State Bldg and Rockefeller Center were built in the 1930s so it has to post date their construction.

Possibly a commemorative coin but if you found it 60 years ago something doesn't seem to add up. 1998 would have been the 100th anniversary of the consolidation of NYC but that doesn't add up right with your finding it 60 years ago. Possibly minted for another event.

Thanks folks. It is strange from the sounds of things. If 1998 was the 100th anniversary of consolidation and it has a date of 1898 perhaps it was 50th anniversary???

I wasn't aware of the significance of 1898. I had never heard of the consolidation.

I just think this recognizes a significant date in the history of NYC.

If it was specifically a commemorative piece, I would expect it to spell out "50th".

Without that designation, I think it capitalizes on an event/ upcoming event (50th Anniversary of Consolidation?) without making it non- saleable after the anniversary passes.

Read the link below about the 100th centennial celebration in 1998. Even meals were only $18.98 for the celebration.

Original poster can date this to 60+ years.

The fact that it doesn't have the World Trade Center on it, seems to put it pre- 1970s at a minimum.
