Decorative Asian Plate with Nested Decorations

    10"
Picked this up yesterday as part of a bundle of items. It seems to be a mystery. I asked our resident expert Apostata and he was just as confused. He said it looks Japanese but the images are incorrect. He also said that it probably isn't really old. He also said there is not much nested decoration before 1920. The edge of the plate is slightly scalloped.

There's a lot going on here..there's a man swinging on a swing attached to a temple? There's a crane, a butterfly and in the lower portion there's a temple? In front of the temple is ....I don't know...maybe an old tree and squirrel? Not really sure, it almost seems out of place...any thoughts?

i cant see if the pagode is quadrilateral or octagonal, chinese pagodas are almost always polygonal and japaneseare almost a square base, i still like it , i have some knowledge about the chinese culturel anthroposofical cases , but i just don,t know the scene

It's a very strange pattern which is why I like it so much.

Can you explain the bottom right..looks like a temple with tree in front of it?

I also noticed that it's odd the the butterfly is sideways?
    4. apostata apostata, 4 years ago
no thats not odd , is also in late 19 ct canton , gives a dynamic i have to get out of here , my eyes are killing me, you have to be my eyes about the upper weird perspective in the drawing of the pagoda, sorry i must be out

help me out , be my eyes is this an overpaint ?, look at the rim on the front side , it has originally been an monocolored beehive crackle , there is difference in the black fluidum probably due to overenameling ( and they corrected later what they call outside in) maybe it,s layer on layer , It is the perfect Frankenstein , that,s why it is inconclusive , i like it
    6. apostata apostata, 4 years ago
under the rope of the man on the you can see the origional beehive crackle, and among and ouside the leaves there is a different of black

Sifu - your power of observation is impressive. I understand what you are saying. I had to go outside in natural sunlight to have a better look.

      **new picture added**

It looks like it's painted heavily in some areas vs other areas. Around the rim you can see some beehive crackle faintly under the paint, but not as much as the center area.

You can also see the painted outline around the rim. Looks a little sloppy and there are some drips of paint.

You can see the area where they overpainted the nested decorations..

i do not know swing set themes , only in kangxi , but it were domestical scenes, enameling always interfere with a beehive crackle see nanking warrior scenes around but this rather incoherent

i cant, see well , what remains is an academical question , is this a sort Trompe-l'oeil, some glazing is rather dense and other are shallow , then the scene it looks like nested

( a meadow is flat if you put dikes around it looks sunken)maybe this is scientifically spoken a circular reasoning ( which is a sin ), but the question remains was it meant to be nested

see the pendant raised enameling around 1900

I guess for $2, I did ok even of it's not a precious antique.

What is the lower right represent...looks like a temple.. and is it a tree in front of the temple? Seems odd, what does this represent?

Apostata, did you see this article? A $35 bowl turns out to be $500,000 Chinese antique!

actually most of the time i am geussing, but this time i guessed right away sort of yongle ( sounds arrogant, which i am not but just a lucky hit of mine ),but i could, not believe it , because the timespan is narrow, this so very rare
the strange thing is , lets say you and i and anyone are an complete rookie , at least you can narrow it down to Ching , so it must be way over 35 dollars

there is no accounting for taste , but it is strange that people misjudged quality , how can people think, this is a lets say a Volkswagen in stead of a Rolls Royce , thats always a mysterie to me
