    What I know:
    - It’s a hand thrown pottery piece made in Safi, Morocco
    - it’s old
    - it’s beautiful
    What I don’t know:
    - just how old it is
    - what the writing is above the word “Safi”

From my research, I have found similar vases that claim theirs are from the early 1900s; however, I can’t seem to find a way to know for sure. Are these people just guessing or do they have some secret place they’re finding this info?

    Thanks for any help!

cant substantiate, because the sampling is too small, to me as a rookie in islamis art , it makes complete sense the color blue is right its double signed and the corrosion is right something like 1900-1920

i can,t readthis but this type of double marking is 1900-194o

Apostata, thank you for your input! That gives me more confidence in the early 20th century approximation. I agree—the corrosion on the bottom and the crackling in the glaze are convincing signs to its antiquity.

I live in Southern Spain and have varipous old and newish pieces of Moroccan pottery. Can I suggest you google Safi Pottery and also look at some of the comments on Trip Advisor which of course are in English. m Theress a lot of it about of course. Hope this helps

strange advice, i think the only way is a databank and see the validated descprition and prices at legit auctions, my conclusion the sampling is to small

so you got to sample this double mark in combination with the type of blue to rule out the fakes

Apostata, may I send you more detailed pictures if you wouldn’t mind?

I have googled till I’m blue and it is so hard to come up with anything substantial.
Do you have any suggestions for a good databank to seek out?
      Thank you.

the point is you have to subscribe which is rather expensive at least 95 dollars so it is only worth while when you are a pro probably , but i am buyer and and an seller at auctions , so i got deals , i collector got a database , but a lot of stuff bounces , its hard to get a good sampling, because this piece wil bounce at almost any auction, because it won,t make the cut and you have to converse probably english pounds to dirham as a buyer, i saw it in artprice among other things for 420 dirham lets say , something like 48 dollars , just one bidder

please don,t send photo,s i am between operations and i got 8-15 request a day about artifacts , not that i am skilled , because i am not skilled in arabic art , but give me tools i and i finished the job , but i am completely exhausted

Well it is a hard to read inscription even in Arabic. It is ...ma, tha, ra and then maybe a b. Could be mathrib which makes no sense. It would be maghrib if the letter was in the other direction which would be Arabic for Morocco. I'm thinking it might even be written by a person who is not able to actually write in Arabic but speaks it (fairly common especially in the old days) and tried to write Maghrib but made a mistake. Your best bet would probably be Arabic for Morocco, written wrong.

      Carmenisacat,
Thank you for your feedback! I think your conclusion makes a lot of sense, especially if it is indeed from early 20th century.
This has all been so helpful!

      Apostata,
I completely understand not wanting more of your time and energy drained.
Your help thus far has been wonderful and I am very grateful.
