I’m not positive but I think these may be sugar tongs which were used to cut off a portion of sugar from a larger ‘chunk’ and then pick up the small portion.

There are people making Horror Movies looking just for this sort off device to use as props for the bad guy!

BHIFOS, such as for whacking off digits and picking up the pieces? I have to agree with you....perfectly ghoulish torture device for the movies.

      LindiMarais, Very interesting.

It has a locking feature on the handles, probably because of the blade just behind the gripper claws.

I just tripped on this while researching another post:

      *snip*

Vintage stainless clam or oyster shucker stamped Made in Italy with the patent number and Hoffritz, NY.

      *snip*

      https://www.worthpoint.com/worthopedia/vintage-hoffritz-ny-clam-shell-opener-1806066897

      The design patent:

      https://patents.google.com/patent/USD196381S/

What if the mystery device in this post is some older variety of bi-valve mollusk tool?

source of many nightmares!... if you are a clam.

      ho2cultcha, Unless maybe you're a geoduck, and then you're scary. };-)

Here are those other patents listed in the 1963 design one, the first of which is actually for a pot and pan lifter/holder:

      https://patents.google.com/patent/US2404224A/
