I absolutely love the form of this vase; it is based on a classic design of a Dutch tulip vase, which were usually made of delftware. This is a very heavy piece, weighing 1lb 12 ounces (794g), and is 8-1/2" (21.6cm) tall. Similar designs featured three or five finger openings but this has the most, with seven openings. I wanted to see what the vase would look like filled with real tulips, and it was very interesting test; it is quite hard to get the tulips into the neck of the vase (especially the lowest two), and seven just barely fit, with quite a bit of prodding. These were very small tulips, too, so I wouldn't say the design was successful if used with typical tulips. Of course other flowers with narrow stems would look lovely, too. This form dates to 1899.

Hi Penny, thank you so much! Yes, it is quite a good size - and really heavy! I really had a challenge getting the tulips in - it was like a puzzle! :)

Just a thought, perhaps the stems of modern tulips are bred to have stronger/thicker stalks to better support what is a heavy flower.

That's beautiful Michelle! And the tulips look amazing in this vase.

Thank you, Peggy! I like your thoughts on the tulips...I thought about recent hybrids and size as well. But then I remembered the big blowsy dutch tulips seen in old paintings. These pink tulips are actually very small for tulips, but were the biggest I was able to find this late in April; I was barely able to make them work. I know Warren has this vase in a huge size (14"!) so I think that would work better for traditionally sized blooms; the issue is the diameter of neck, and how many stems can fit into it. I really wanted to try it out, and fun doing it, too! :)

Superb vase with a stunning display of tulips! I'm planting some more very soon...so I hope that by September I might just be lucky enough to find a tulip vase of my own...well, I can dream, anyway! :-)

Marin, thanks so much! I hope your tulips do well for you! I can't grow them here unless they are in a protected pot, because they are candy to our local deer - I am jealous you can grow them! Good luck with finding your tulip vase! :)
