    I think that this is called a Duccio frame. At least i've heard it called that before. That's a frame w/ doors which open up to expose a picture of a saint or something from the bible. This was one of those spontaneous purchases - not sure why i bought it, but it can go w/ all my religious art. I think the doors represent the Church doors. Very fancy decoration on this! I'm pretty certain it is Italian.

      Oh, this is really beautiful!! I have a diptych with the same type of design and gilding. Mine is Italian as well.
