I have no clue what these things are or what they were used for. They have some writing on them and it looks like they are both the same, but one is smaller than the other. Any ideas?

They are oil lamps. They look to be Hebrew.
I have one made exactly as yours is made but with slight variation in the figures on it.
I bought mine in Israel in about 1992.
Very inexpensive little tourist items but they actually work.
I think there a probably utube videos showing the simple steps in using them.
Hey Belbizzle, here's a post, that I put up a couple of years ago:

They're Fun and make a nice Mood Lamp and burn for a long time! :^)
This is a good way to use oil that has gone rancid, instead of throwing it away.... Lamps like yours have been used for thousands of years.
Damonways, these lamps do not have lids….they are still made as they were made by ancient people. Lids are not needed…just don’t turn them over.
Thank you for all the replies! There is definitely some oily residue on the inside of these and now it makes sense why. So cool! I’m excited to have found these!!
These are the type of oil lamps that Jesus was referring to in the parable of the 10 virgins waiting for the wedding ceremony with only 5 having extra oil for their lamps. Now u can see why having a canister of extra oil would be necessary if the only light u had came from these tiny lamps. I’ve got a couple I bought in Israel in the 80s but never tested them to see how long they would stay lit before running out of oil. The people in Jesus day would all have certainly been fully aware of exactly how long before the tiny lamps would need refilling
