Here's my 'good set' of these things, I'm pretty sure I also have a 2nd pair someplace that have led a much harder previous life than these two. They are BOSE model 2.2, in distinct LEFT and RIGHT wedge shaped simulated walnut veneer cabinets. These are serial numbers 173893 (right) and 176505 (left) both with a build date code of 88945. (meaning maybe 1988/89, or 1994? I dunno...?)
The other set of these I'm remembering (buried somewhere in the basement?) have rotten surrounds on their main drivers (at least) and much more cabinet wear, but this pair remains intact and original -- presumably also fully functional. (but I haven't tested *any* of them)
I don't actually have a large amount of experience (or opinion) with any models of BOSE speakers, but one thing I think I've learned about them over the years is that people, in general, either LOVE THEM TO DEATH (over all others) or THOROUGHLY DETEST THEM -- usually for the same basic sorts of reasoning that they are (one way or the other) expen$ive, and UNIQUE, both in style and engineering. Go figure...
;-) :-) :-)
During Vietnam a lot of soldiers brought Bose speakers over and left them there when the war was over. Vietnamese people think they are the best thing since sliced bread. They never heard a real high end speaker like Dahlquists. I used to buy and sell used bose in the mid 2000s. Some I repaired the surrounds, some I just sold as is. I had one ad up for 15 minutes and a guy from Canada called me and said he'd drive down and buy them. Next day he showed up all the way from Vancouver BC! He told me he was shipping them back to Vietnam, where the materials for surrounds and grill materials were super cheap.
I had a quadraphonic system when I was overseas, Bose 901s for the front speakers and Bose 501s for the rear. I did not leave them in Vietnam. I actually hauled them all over the USA, almost coast to coast before I got rid of them. I don't remember what I did with them. I think I gave the 901s to one friend and the 501s to another? Not really sure.
Nice wonderful speakers.
