Inherited broach/ladies scarf pin? Single oval iridescent green to blue almost blinding bright. Can anyone id the stone and era? My grandfather bought it for my grandmother. He was very well to do and only bought the best of the best. Ireland born and bred but travelled often as aristocrats do.

Please would you give us the dimensions? Can you confirm the number on the back - beginning with an 8?

I just notice the ruler in the last pic!!

Gillian, To me, that first number looks like a nine. It's the other two numbers that I can't decipher. >8-0

      I withdraw my '8' - Thanks keramikos!

Ive managed to magnify the stamp, can I post it somewhere here? I see what looks like a snowman to be 8 or maybe a celtic g. Then maybe a c then maybe a 2

You can go to your original posting, delete one (or more) of the photos and replace with a new photograph.

Clairey, a snowman sounds more like an "8" character. So, what would "8C2" signify?

FWIW, both your third and fourth picture seem a bit redundant, so you could edit your post, delete one of those, and add your magnified picture.

Could it be 9 carat gold?

What a beautiful black opal! They were often set in lower carat gold because the opal stones are soft and the lower carat gold is harder and gives the stone more protection. Looks Edwardian era, given the bar pin style and old safety catch.

How amazing... I've found a completely hidden mark on the inside of the stone setting, looks like a 5. All by it's own self? I've uploaded a photo if anyone can shed any light on this deepening mystery!
