I just heard of National Cat Day so in honor of that, I’ll show the newest picture of my fur baby Uno who is now 6 months old.
I posted his “baby picture” when his eyes were still blue….they are now their permanent color of a golden shade but in this picture, his sclera look blue (rather than white) for some reason.
He and his mom, MissKitty, are my constant companions!
So, Happy National Cat Day to all the ‘cat collectors’!
cute,,,,....HNCD... The last 2 cats I had lived to be 21 years old ...smiling
Cisum and AO, thank you both for the loves!
Solitaire00, Wow, 21 years! That’s a testament to the good care they received from you. I hope my cats enjoy long and healthy lives also. :^)
Thanks for leaving a comment!
Aw sweet kitty, and love him draped in the Hawaiian lei
Watchsearcher, Belated Happy National Cat Day. :-)
Uno is one adorable little feline.
I myself celebrated National Cat Day by giving my cat a spa. OK, I lie. My cat gets a spa every Sunday, and she doesn't really enjoy it (it consists of claw clipping and fur brushing).
I have not attempted claw clipping - are you fairly well scarred up by now??? <;^]
My MissKitty is the wise one who loves the scratching pad but Uno is more of a knuckle-head juvenile who just loves upholstery.
I have so much furniture covered in drop cloths, it looks as if I’m getting ready to paint…..that’s not even effective because he can just worm his way under the drop cloths.
Maybe my furniture will survive his childhood….but now you’ve given me an idea!!
Maybe I could round off the sharp points of his claws…..but would I then be dripping blood on the very upholstery and carpet I’m trying to save??
Here is that beguiling cat once again, so wonderful to look at, could never tire of his exploits, big hugs !~
Watchsearcher, Now is the time to start. Past time, really.
I started trimming my cat's claws when she was six weeks old to get her used to it. She's usually quite good about the claw trimming, it's the fur brushing that tends to make her testy.
Take Uno into the bathroom, and close the door so it's just you and him (and no escape for him).
Do whatever works to make him happy but calm, and then try to lay him on his side.
Take each paw, squeeze it gently to make each claw extend fully, and trim.
If you're lucky like I am with my cat, at least some of the claws are unpigmented so you can see how far down the quick grows, and be able to avoid cutting into those.
Good luck. };-)

I appreciate the tutorial!!! Tomorrow I’ll give it my best shot. He likes to be handled so maybe it will work out.
What kind of clippers do you use?
I love that music!
Nothing too special. I've got all metal ones similar to these:

But it sounds like you could try human nail clippers:

I should have looked online for first-time claw trimming advice:

Woda gets his manicures with a pair of these, I don't remember where I got them, but similar are commonly available. One of the keys to the process is to try to move quickly once you get kitty settled in your lap -- the 'thumb' is usually the one kitty will argue about the most in my experience...GOOD LUCK for lack of bloodshed?!!

AnythingObscure, That's the guillotine style. Some people prefer it.
The 'thumb,' AKA the dew claw. };-) It needs trimming, just like the rest:

As to holding the cat in your lap while clipping the claws, that probably works well with cats that love laps.
Mine isn't a lap lover, so I put her on the bathroom vanity counter, and clip them there. The advantage is easy cleanup afterwards.
Keramikos and AO, I read all of the advice and did a little preliminary paw pressing to extend the claws….he’s used to me caressing his pretty little paws so that went well.
My daughter-in-law might have some of those special clippers, AO, since she’s clipped the boxer’s nails. I’ll see how it goes with regular nail clippers since they might be less noticeable/less intimidating.
I’m grateful for this advice because I’ve never even thought of clipping his nails.
Another hopefully useful note -- I've never found need to even think about trimming Woda's hind claws, they are always naturally blunt enough. His front ones OTOH become deadly little needle-points if I neglect the duty every week or two. Fortunately he knows what his scratching post is for and uses it instead of the furniture, usually... ;-)
I really appreciate this tried and true advice!
I’ll let you know how it goes. :^)
PhilDMorris, “beguiling”….your word perfectly fits this little fellow. He’s gotten into the habit of showing me his affection by rubbing his head on my hands - there’s a term for it: head bunting…he wakes me up with that, sometimes way too early, but I understand his intention. I’m honored.
Watchsearcher, Ah yes, head bunting. <3
It's how I know that my own cat doesn't totally hate me.
I figure that she sees me as a freakish foster mother: large, strangely bipedal, somewhat decrepit, and not terribly smart, but who has opposable dew claws that allow her to do some enviable things.
AnythingObscure is right about the rear claws. They tend to stay shorter, perhaps because of their function in digging and jumping.
Keramikos, That’s so funny…I’m sure your kitty holds you in the highest regard. After all, you have a special skill of doling out cat food and you frequently collect her poop……therefore you are totally amazing!
Totally cool, isn’t it!
Cats have their own little quirky ways…for some reason known only to Mocha, that area is kinda off-limits. }:^(
I love her coat…between her self -grooming and you brushing, it’s fabulous.
Probably 1 day of Mocha’s shedding is equal to 2 days of Uno and MissKitty’s…..these guys amaze me every time I Swiffer the floor and get up so much cat hair!
They love to pounce on each other, wrestle, claw and chew and roll around on the floor like one big fur ball - then lick each other good and rest up a bit before round 2…….and I’m thinking, “Stop it! You are probably tearing out more hair for me to deal with!”
Watchsearcher, Ha!
Thank you to everyone who dropped by and left comments and/or loves!
I’ll pass them on to Uno, MissKitty (Uno’s feline mom) and Tigger (Uno and MK’s sidekick tabby cat).
Happy New Year 2022 Patricia, have a wonderful year and that goes for the kitties too :)
