Chief In-ground Garbage Can
A few weeks ago AO posted a picture that reminded me of our trash can. So here it is.
Often seen on the East coast in cities, you don't see these as often on the West coast, especially in a residential home. Even today, people seem fascinated by this garbage can and how it works. Not a single dog or other animal knocked our can over!
It's pretty simple..if your tossing stuff in, there's a foot handle. If you want to take the whole can out, you flip the lid open and grab the handle attached to the garbage can. And no...its sealed good, so it doesn't fill with water.
Of course this hasn't been used in decades. And when it was used, the refuse company started charging a little extra because they had to bend down and pull it out. Heck...they don't even get put of the truck anymore. And if you didn't know, most have a camera that records what is being dumped out if each bin.
I expected the cobwebs, but hadn't realized there is still some garbage in it.
yup we had one we used to follow the swill truck is the summer and wait for them to screw up the loader and spill swill all over the street ...lol kind of like spanky and the gang ....lol
Perfect way to keep trash out of sight. I didn’t know about the cameras but it’s a good idea.
I should of read what you wrote up here in the northeast we used them to put a swill in ..local farms had a contract with the city ..they inturn put it in a vat and boiled it and gave it to the pigs ,,, never saw one for trash .hmmmm it was my job to put the swill in the bucket.....lol later
Some of the houses in my subdivision still have these, (now unused, of course) all probably did in 1954 when everything was brand new, but I think most (including mine) are otherwise gone now...
Cool, never seen the like. Very interesting. Didn't know about the cameras! Also very interesting.
dav2no1, Cool. :-)

Somebody even sells replacement parts for the Chief brand:

And they might be making a comeback, because of concerns about plastic pollution:
