      I will agree with Vynil on being a stick match holder. You opened the box of matches a bit then slid the entire box down into this holder. I have visited one a good many times in my younger years when we had wood stoves.

      My grandparents had a similar one by their gas cook stove—way back in the days when you struck the match, then turned the little knob to let the gas flow.

      I agree w/ Vynil & fhrjr2 -- a wall mounted holder for a box of large wood matches.
