    Hello All:

Here's another from my late father's collection of tools and sundry collectibles. It's a carpenter's wood scribe, but I cannot find any reference on online to the name stamp several times which is "A. Pierce." It doesn't seem like a homemade item as there is some detailed metal work involved, looks like bronze.

Are there any tool collectors out there that happen to recognize this name? One of the photos that I posted here shows the impression. I don't know if what I have here is just one of a million similar items or a rarity.

    Thanks so much!

Yes EricWood, it is a woodworker's tool called a "marking gauge" that indeed is used to scribe lines/marks parallel to an edge, usually for further cutting or drilling operations. Looks like a *very nice* example too, likely made of rosewood!!
      :-) :-) :-)
I'd guess the name stamped on it is that of a former owner instead of the maker of the tool, I do agree with you that it is unlikely to be 'homemade' because of what looks to be superior workmanship especially of the brass portions. Those parts may be a clue to its maker however, even if not marked themselves, they seem to be of a somewhat more complex/precise quality than most other marking gauges I've seen, so searching for others with similar hardware may get you somewhere to ID and date it...?

I agree with anythingobscure and I would venture to say it is not at all homemade. Not all tools were marked years ago so you may never know who made it.

That thar ting were factry made ! Never had one that nice. This is one of those tools that you never can find when you need it and you trip over when you just finished needing it.
