Hi Guys... Here's another one from my dad's vintage tool collection. It's obviously some type of hand drill, and perhaps that's all it is and nothing more. But I thought I would post it here to find out if anyone knew anything more about this. The only identifiable mark is the number 8 as you can see in the photo. Is this for any particular industry, or just a wood drill in general? Thanks for any information that anybody could share. You guys are always so helpful!
You can find similar ones if you do an image search for handheld wood auger.
The 8 is probably the size of hole to be drilled, 8/16 ths of an inch or 1/2 inch. Please verify and let us know
Very Interesting Tool You Have. In all my tool collecting years i have never seen one just like it, but i Love it. Questions: What is the O.D. diameter of the drill bit its self? What did your dad do for a living, and or hobby? Here is my take on it: Appears it could be blacksmith made, or/not. Judging by the angle of the point grind, it is/was used on soft material, such as rubber, etc. OR, it could just be a hole clean-up chaser. If the O.D. is .199 inches then it is a number 8 drill bit. OR, it could be the 8th one in a full set of them. Thanks for showing it.

Thanks for all the feedback. I have done a few Google searches on HANDHELD WOOD AUGER and can't find a similar tool. I also changed WOOD to LEATHER, but still no luck. Izenglish: my dad was a director of a trade school which was unrelated to his antique tool collecting hobby. He loved the really unusual ones and scoured flea markets and antique shops for them. Some things I look at and can't even imagine. He also collected skeleton keys... Vintage straight razors... Glass eye cups... animal skulls... Rare coins and more. He was an inventor and a really interesting guy who we miss dearly. Thanks for the help and questions. I'll try to size the tool tomorrow in response to Motoolz's question.
