Hard to find subject matter of the Civil War era. This is a ninth plate tintype housed in a period thermoplastic case.
Fireman wears a bib uniform with a large patriotic shield on the front. Collars have large stars and on his head is a hat with large leather "2" on the front.
Many of these early firemen answered the call to suppress the insurrection in 1861. Entire military companies of firemen were created. In fact, the 11th New York Infantry was filled by so many firemen, that it was known as the First NY Fire Zouaves in addition to the more well known Ellsworth's Zouaves.
Patriotic matting around the image suggests this fireman may have answered Lincoln's call to save the Union; however, I do not have any documentation on him.
My original tintype and my jpgs of it-- not for reproduction without permission.
