I purchased this today at a second hand store for $2. I looked up Hildegarde Howard and she was the recipient of a Phd in 1929 - about 1 mile from where i found it. She studied the Emeryville shell mounds for her thesis. She became a very well known paleontologist, and in particular a paleo-ornithologist. She discovered a bunch of fossils and named them at the La Brea tar pits. Hildegarde Howard. She was also the first woman president of the Union of Scientists or something like that. an interesting article about her is here: https://trowelblazers.com/hildegarde-howard/
