this MOTH-GAS tin was produced by The LEWY Chemical Co. New York USA was used to gas moth.
Due to the furs and woolen clothes of the 30's early 40's, this method of keeping the moth out of one closets was popular.
the LEWY Chemical Co claim to have used this Gas since the late 30's early 40's. I have found a patent renewal from 1950's, also found some court case information - indicating that if it kills moths it will kill you too!
This time is empty (thankfully) it does have holes around the side of the tin, and a place for the the hook to hang in the closet.
thought this was interesting and a little history lesson is always fun.

It looks like Lewy Moth-Gas goes back to the 19th century (this particular Google Book link isn't too atrocious):
