    Mom's Sense of Humor

My mother was an old school strict Japanese lady. Sometimes I forget she had a odd sense of humor.

She was multi-talented and painted, sewed, created needlework, was Japanese poetry(Senryu) expert and judge, silk bonsai master, excellent cook and many other things.

These items are from the early 80s and have sat in a small half bathroom by the back door. This bathroom has rarely been used in the last decade. The bear is a little dusty and dirty, but it kinda adds to his character. Every once in awhile I open the door and these items make me smile! I love you mom and miss you!

The original is by Dutch Painter Rien Poortvliet for his book Gnomes.

The wiki link doesn't work well. Try this link and search for the book:

Ahhh ok. Thanks, I figured she copied it from somewhere.. This is one of her early paintings when she was practicing her skills. Almost all of her other paintings are landscapes and flowers.

She did a good job. I checked her landscape paintings which shows she had great skills. Something to be proud of.

dav2no1, I'm late to the party, but mp.kunst is quite right that your mother's painting is a fairly faithful rendering of an illustration from the book "Gnomes" (this archive dor org copy appears not to be of the first edition, because it has an ISBN, but it's close enough):
