    If they're not coasters, they were probably intended to be made into doilies, anyway??

    Each of the ten is the same, a blue center surrounded by white. 3-1/2" square. Cotton thread, probably.

    Handmade?? Age??? I dunno. Not my area of expertise... <lol>

      they maybe the start of a larger blanket or table cloth, it looks like that to me.

      AnythingObscure, I agree with RichmondLori, it looks like somebody started to make a blanket or more probably a table cloth.

      They're crocheted, and they're motifs. You make the motifs, and then join them together, via sewing or crocheting:

      The size, shape, etc., of the motifs is limited only by the skill and imagination of the maker, e.g.:
