Found this ruler at garage sell years ago and now I’m considering restoring it. Bad idea? Also, apparently this was made before you could buy one. When we’re rulers begin to be manufactured? Any info would be appreciated.

Cool piece.. at first I thought it was a sector ruler, but it's not.

      https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sector_(instrument)#

Rulers date back to 2650 B.C. ...and supposedly folding rulers were invented in 1851.

I would suggest you do not restore your piece until you know the full history of it.

I’m amazed at the skill of the engraver- the uniform varied graduation lines, the detail in the initials, the very small differences in the numbers, and the rivet work. I wonder if the typeface or the gauge of the brass would be a clue to its age.
