I had just been looking at this thorn vase for sale, and then soon after happened to be going through some Loetz patterns, when something clicked, and I went back to compared the two. The vase has three layers of applied glass scallops as the pattern shows, and the angle of the vase’s rim and the pattern looked to be about the same.

But something also led me to believe that this piece was Loetz before I handled it in person – I have another thorn vase with a cut rim of the same angle, and pieces with the same décor are shown in Dr. Hai Hasselbach’s artcle ‘An attempt to identify early Loetz production from 1880 -1897’ on Loetz.com, I will show this beige cased piece in an accompanying post (https://www.collectorsweekly.com/stories/305047-early-loetz-thorn-beige-and-pink).

The rim on this vase is beautifully cut and angled on both sides, so there is no question in my mind that it was not cut down at a later date. My pink thorn vase arrived today, and I am very pleased with it. It is heavy for its size (7" or 17.8cm tall), and the glass has a beautiful color (a spreading deep red-pink to pale pink) and clarity to it; it is a high quality piece of glass. In hand, I do believe it to be Loetz. I also believe it is related to PN I-3108 due to the angled cut and applied scallops, but as Warren kindly pointed out, this vase is taller than that shown in 3108. Several patterns for pieces close to number 3108 are missing, so this vase could very well match one of the missing patterns.

Perfect. Congratulations on getting this piece into your collection. You can add an indication of the width of the vase at the bottom.

The design drawing then is very clever : reductive. That angle.

Thanks so much Ales! I believe my vase is a larger version of 3108; it is 3" (7.6cm) across.

Thank you Kevin! Yes, the angle is quite unusual, isn't it? :)
