The most intriguing thing about this to me is the frame. I suspect that there is a story behind this fan. The scene on it suggests to me religious parable and the bagpiper on the frame looks Middle Eastern to me, too. Bagpipes were used by many regions, India, the Middle East, Northern Africa, Scandinavia, Scotland, etc.

The frame is absolutely beautiful. Not sure what era the frame nor fan is from. I assume the fan is from the 18th century? I thought the bagpiper and the man both looked Middle Eastern. After some online browsing the fruit like decor seems to be 18th & 19th European and yes possibly a biblical scene. This is the first antique item I've purchased.. I'm not sure where to take it to hopefully find out more information. I am very curious of the history behind it.

Very likely French. These came in all colors and styles and with stunning hand painted details and carvings. Have read up on these a bit (trying to find one like yours that is behind glass, but one your yours is upward of $400). Material was often silk, and some had feathers, gilding, and such. This one is a great representation of the higher end type, and the condition is really stellar, considering it's not archive level framed. Dates go as far back as mid 1700's and into the mid 1800's. Would bet this is from the mid 1800's (the fan) or possibly older.

Anyone have any ideas about the bagpiper carved in the ivory?
    6. apostata apostata, 3 years ago
i don,t know about the bagpiper

what we got to do is this IMO, we have to combine for the common denominator

we got an demi-luna pseudo ormolu non chromolithografic fan this is strange

strange stuff because it ought to louis 16 style

      so i don,t know
