I live in Germany and recently acquired this painting from a friend. Do you know anything about the painter?

      Hi, Bschraeder. :-)

      Beautiful.

The signature looks to me like "Kessel Düsseldorf"

I found this painting with a similar signature:

      *snip*

A very beautiful painting by the painter Kessel - Düsseldorf.
It has been painted after the well-known painting the ‘goudweger’ by Salomon Koninck

      *snip*

      https://www.catawiki.com/en/l/36675159-kessel-20e-eeuw-goudweger

It has a picture of a business card for K. Kessel in Düsseldorf, so perhaps K. Kessel specialized in making copies of old masters?

As to which old master painting of which yours might be a copy:

      *snip*

An Old Woman Reading, Probably the Prophetess Hannah | Rembrandt van Rijn | 1631 | The Rijksmuseum-73

      *snip*

As to the back stamp, somebody else here had a painting with it, and gave some background:

      *snip*

Schutzmann is the company and Viktoria Maltuch is the trade name for painting canvas. Schutzmann was founded 1844. During WWII the company was bombed out and the new buildings where built in Herrsching.

      *snip*

      https://www.collectorsweekly.com/stories/190879-oil-on-canvas-city-shore-linegreece

      *snip*

      Back of canvas is stamped:

      A. SCHUTZMANN, HERRSCHING, BEI MUNCHEN
      VIKTORIA MALTUCH

      *snip*

Schutzmann is the framers studio near Herrsching Germany near Munich - Viktoria Maltuch is the creator of the linen canvas.

The business on the sticker seems to be long gone, as Bleichstraße 17 in Wiesbaden now seems to be occupied by a nail salon:

      Thank you so much!

      Bschraeder, You're welcome. :-)

In reading back, I notice that I had an editing problem:

"As to which old master painting of which yours might be a copy:"

I got my foot caught in the grammar, and fell down. >8-0

Part of the problem is that my only editor is me, and that's reminiscent of the old saying about the person who represents himself or herself in court has a fool for a lawyer.

You probably figured out what I was trying to say, anyway. };-)

Yes I completely understood - thank you.

Bschraeder, Thank you for understanding. };-)

I found another listing for a Kessel Düsseldorf painting that gives the first name of the artist as "Karl":

      *snip*

Ölgemälde "Im Wirtshaus", vermutl. Karl Kessel, in aufwendigem Prunkrahmen, um 1950. Rechts unten signiert "Kessel Düsseldorf"

      *snip*
