I've got this on small market in Belgrade. Looks like it's handcrafted from a 5 francs coin. You can see the obverse of the coin on the second photo, with words "LIBERTE EGALITE FRATERNITE". I've found that coins with this obverse were minted in 1848-49 and 1871-1889. But I'd like to know moreabout brooch. At what time could it be crafted? Was it popular to make jewelry from coins? How it was made? I would be grateful for any help.
UPD: the brooch has marks, which are very tiny. I tried to make a couple of photos.

      Hey Tenshi, try this:

Go down to fig.12 for an example of the clasp on Your Brooch from around 1890! I Hope that this helps! Bill :^)

This Brooch shows how the Silver was carved out of the Coin:

Thanks, Bill! The clasp looks like long c-clasp but it's probably broken trombone. And brooch has round hinge also.

Wow! Thank you so much, Bill! I've never heard about love tokens, so it can be love story that makes this brooch even more interesting :)
    7. tenshi tenshi, 3 years ago
It's definitely not a love token. Brooch is french, one mark is for silver (i suppose it's boar's head) and another is maker's mark. Unfortunately, I can't read it.

The coin is called an ‘Hercule’. It is a design by Augustin Dupré that goes back to 1795-1796. The basic design is of Hercules surrounded by the Republic on our left and Justice on our right. The earlier version is slightly different. But your version of the silver coin dates from the second period of the coin’s use : from 1848 during the Second Republic. You can see a hand on top of the pike that the figure of the Republic is holding.
