Hi guys, I need some help with this vase.
I wasn't able to find another example anywhere and have no clue about where it came from. It is a black lacquered wooden vase with these leaves/flowers carved on it, cut through the lacquer and reaching the wood. Never saw anything like it, although I am familiar with Japanese lacquered wooden vases with all sorts of decorations and also some Chinese examples with mother of pearl inlays, etc.
The fact is that I don't even know if this is an Oriental/Asian vase. Any help is welcome!
These are not pictures taken by me, these are from the listing I bought it from.
I didn't receive it yet, so it would be helpful to know more about it and if I should keep it or not.
The relief carving is cool..
Thanks dav2no1, I too think it is a lovely piece. The carving style is very unusual, being cut through the lacquer, which in my understanding kind of risks chipping the delicate surface. I would love to know who did it and where.
Thanks fortapache and kwqd!
Interesting process on this piece. I would take it to chinatown if I was in a big city and there are many places which sell the old with the new and ask some of them.
Hope you are well !~
Thank you vetraio50!
Hello Phil, I am fine thank you, and I wish you are doing fine too my friend. We do have a Tokiotown here in Sao Paulo and your idea is great, thank you!
Beautiful pattern, kind of an orchid design
Magnificent vase and the carvings are amazing! Wonderful find!
Thanks a lot vcal, Newfld, Alfie21 and jscott0363! Glad you liked it! Let's hope someone knows something about it!
so do they burn out the inside when its just a block...?
Thank you Reise for the love!
Walkingthefloor, these vases are woodrurned and hollowed in the process.
thank you for the info ..nice piece..
Even though it is a vase form, I would never put water in it. Wetting the wood interior could cause expansion on the wood which would cause the beautiful surface to crack…..unless the interior surface was waterproofed. Having such a small opening, it would be very hard to determine if the interior is bare wood or if it was waterproofed in some way.
Hi Walkingthefloor, I meant these to be "woodturned" but my phone's correct or changed it to this nonsense. Sorry.
Watchsearcher, thanks for the comment. You are absolutely right. I don't think it is possible to waterproof a piece like this with lacquer, that must be applied with a special brush, forming layers that cross each other and that are smoothed and polished to become water tight. Dry it will remain.
The vase should arrive in three days now. Seller isn't very friendly and has nothing to say about it. Can't even say when or where he bought it. Awful type, yuck! .????
Found similar forms (not decorations) in Vietnamese lacquered vases.
That's very interesting! It looks like inlay. I'm wondering if you have received it yet? It's large so I couldn't say it's a weed pot. Which wouldn't need water. Curious!
(Very much ) later (maybe) i need an compartmentalization program for the grind down
a type of tsuru maki-e roiro
probably Hira Maki-e instead of Taka Maki-e
probably orchid design and decorative use and not for nageire
Shareurpassion, it is big indeed, with a small opening that would not be practical for weed stashing, I guess :) It is a light wood vase, the design is carved on it, cut through the black lacquer. Has no markings whatsoever. I wasn't able to find an image of nothing like it yet.
Apostata, I am not sure I understand your comment. Anyway, I searched for the terms you mentioned, the many kinds of Maki-e techniques and still wasn't able to find anything so big or with similar carvings. Maybe a modern or experimental piece of Chinkin Maki-e? Maybe not even Japanese but Vietnamese? I will take new pictures next week or so and I can focus on details that could help you identify it, if you tell me what you want me to do. I will also try to see how it is carved in the inside.
i cant do better than this , when i am wrong well then i am wrong no sweat, i ran an whole database i am out of options
it is not the easy way out , sorry but first i got a business to run
