Took a ride last weekend in this S-4 locomotive. It was built by Alco in 1952 and is s switch engine. Switch engines but together the trains for the road locomotives. Alco was a major manufacturer of steam locomotives but they didn't make it in the diesel era despite having built this locomotive which is still pulling trains.
Locomotives like this are delightfully noisy as the front and rear doors were open for ventilation. Aside from the sound of the engine and the horn there is also a bell which is always ringing. Keeps people working in the yard from being run over. Also it rocks back and forth a lot which for me makes it more fun. Personally I would like to hold on the railings outside but their rules require everyone be seated.
The cab is in the rear of this locomotive just as it would be in a steam locomotive.
