This 8 cm high Laughing Buddha or Budai, carved from soapstone, is a recent flea market find. Probably a souvenir from 'yesterday', but still, maybe you can date it more precisely or tell me other things about it ?
tough call pooh
first of all it is stealite
you always put the focus on dating try to modify this on quality or characteristics
in plain english is it the easy way out ?
IMO with bronze stealite and nefrite etc we have to start with the presence of the curvilinearity of the feet and the hands= ok
2 can you see the lets say the white of the eye in combination with lets the entropion of the eyelids= ok
3 are the eyesockets angular or not = no they are not =ok
4 are the teeth an layer of bricks ( like squares ) or do they stand on there own = ok
5 they did the efforts of inside dimpling concering the cheeks and probably polished it
i am certainly not a fan of the tonality , but it is well done soapstone , i think made but i am not sure before WW2
question did the singer Björk stylized this , haha
greetings Waki
Many thanks for your analyze. I found one like it one the Internet, which was believed to be from the early 20th century. That confirms your point of view. I think too that the quality is good, that's why I bought it at the flea market.
