Silver and green glass cabochon overlay on a art glass vase by Ferdinand von Poschinger (Buchenau, circa 1902). This vase features a milky opalescent mother-of-pearl lustre upper decor, while the lower portion is highlighted by wavy amber-coloured, "Helios" oil-spot type decor. The well-thought out and placed silver overlay features four green glass cabochons. Excellent condition w/ no complications in the glass or overlay. Dimensions: 6.5”(H) x 3.8”(W).

Often Art Nouveau / Jugendstil overlay tends to “smother” the natural beauty of the art glass decor below. This vase by Ferdinand von Poschinger, which can be found in a few different sizes (of which this is one of the taller versions), was designed in such a way that the overlay and underlying decor do not interfere but compliment each other. The green glass cabochons provide a nice color contrast to the predominant amber and white colored decor ground. Versions of this Poschinger vase were also produced with copper overlay and different colored cabochons. The Passau Museum has multiple versions of the line production in its various forms.

Thanks to Alfredo for additional information and attribution confirmation.

I do not like silver overlay as a rule but this is different... very different!

The designers respected the beauty and shape of the glass and its decoration. It adds another dimension to the piece. Congratulations on this wonderful find. It is most certainly a museum quality example of Art Nouveau craftsmanship.

I HAVE SEEN THIS VASE IN DIFFERENT SIZES LISTED AS LOETZ. LIKE MR.T I DO NOT LIKE SILVER OVERLAY ON GLASS.......BUT I COULD FORCE MYSELF TO LIVE WITH THIS BEAUTY !!!

It's a shorter list to note what hasn't been marketed as Loetz!

BTW - you and Tony can ship me any and all of your overlay vases. :) I actually prefer them, assuming that the overlay "works" with the glass and doesn't smother it. From my limited time collecting, the European overlays are more harmonious, while the American overlays tend to smother the glass underneath with needless ornamentation. Also, the European overlay work tends to be more geometric, while the American overlay is almost always flowered. I certainly prefer the former.

Gorgeous glass without a doubt. Beautiful, beautiful - sometimes I just run out of adjectives, but this is beyond words. Hurrah for Ferdinand von Poschinger.
