A Loetz Powolny Vase with applied Mascarones.

From the Austrian architect and designer Michael Powolny (1871-1954) only seven PN's III/278-285 (1914) - forming the basis of the very successful Ausf-157, opal with stripes - and another 22 PN's III/922-943, 1034 (1918) are known, most of them were exclusively made for Bakalowits, Vienna and produced (but not sold) by Loetz. In his designs, Powolny was strongly inspired by Venitian glass from the Renaissance period, and thereby he became a 'trend setter' for the 1920's. My vase PN=III/940 (1918), made in 28 examples out of 'blaugruenes Glas mit Kristallauflagen' ( blue-green glass with crystal applications), is the only vase in this series of three designs with applications, the other two PN=III/941,942 are lidded jars. The four applied crystal mascarones show the head of a putto, a favorite design motiv of Powolny. Another vase made of 'Anna-Yellow' uranium glass is exhibited at the 'Museum for Angewandte Kunst', Vienna. The vase stands 23.5 cm high, the diameter at the top rim is 11.7 and at the foot 9.5 cm.
