This small bronze nude by Saegusa Sotaro is about 6.25" high (16 cm) and weighs about 2.9 lbs (1.3 kg). It is signed on the back near the base. It comes with its tomobako, cloth and documentation but is missing its ribbon. My second masterwork by SS.
This fills two holes in my collection, a figural piece and something substantial in bronze by SS. Not the best timing for me since it is tax time here but I have not seen anything like this by him before, so felt the need to acquire it. At the time he made this, from what I can glean, SS was mostly engaged in making large sculptures and installations. Probably my last piece by SS unless I find something ridiculously inexpensive in the future.
I think the mood of this piece is "happy"...., but the artist titled it "Distant".
I found this by accident on an online auction site. Saegusa's name did not appear in the auction title and a search which included the description also did not find it. I am not sure how I found it. I bookmarked it and the seller quickly offered me a 30% discount. I suspect it had been up for awhile so there was some sellers' anxiety as they had probably not had any interest it since no one interested in Saegusa was able to find it.. Still not cheap, but it might but have sold for the original price if anyone could have found it.
There is an odd addition to his signature on the base of the statue which I have seen on one other piece in my collection. Not sure what the significance is. I had assumed that it was a mold error on the first piece but now question that conclusion.
WOW CONGRATS !!!
Wonderful sculpture!! I love it when sellers offer me huge discounts.
Thanks, Kevin. I am very "happy" with it!
Thanks jscott0363! SS did some nice work. I appreciated the discount. I would not have paid the original amount and it would have ended up on someone else's shelf.
Thanks for loving my new okimono Kevin, jscott0363 and vynil33rpm!
So cool Kevin and I'm happy you found it.
I didn't know SS made figural pieces like this, and so good it's in bronze too.
Congrats!
Thanks Karen. I have seen one or two other figural pieces, so I knew he made some. Those were much larger so I was happy to find one in a manageable size.
The sculptural quality is supreme in capturing this moment, I am not a big fan of newer sculpture, but I love this one, gorgeous and beautiful pics !~
Thanks PhilDMorris! By the time SS made this he had been working at his craft for over 50 years so drew upon decades of experience in designing and making it. He had been lauded for his designs and execution for nearly 40 years by then. Not surprising he was getting pretty good. Remarkably, he was active for another 30 years afterward. He worked almost until his death.
Thanks Cisum, Watchsearcher, Karen, ho2cultcha and fortapache!
Thank you vcal!
this is an extremely well mould, you can,t pay enough for this, well done
the censer is let,s state we agree to disagree about the quality
greetings waki
Thanks for your comments waki! I agree. This sculpture has a grace and balance that the censer lacks. I think that the execution of the censer was quality workmanship but the design falls short, possibly because it adheres too closely to a traditional design. I find the contrast in design between the body and top of the censer to be jarring. It was not much money and my first masterwork by SS and I was not sure when I would find another in my price range so I jumped on it. No regrets but probably would have passed on it if I had found this sculpture first.
Regards,
Kevin
