This is the largest enameled Baccarat that I own; it is a massive vase, standing 14-1/2" (36.8cm) tall. The form is a classic shape used by Baccarat; I also have vases in the same shape that are 8" (20.3cm) tall, 10" (25.4cm) tall and 12" (30.5cm) tall. The enamel work on this vase is very finely and beautifully done; all of the details on the bird and leaves are done in gilt. The beautiful greens and reds of the vase echo colors I have seen used on some early Japanese vases.

Happily, Baccarat dated quite a few of their pieces, which is a very helpful way to trace the popularity of various styles through the years. This vase is dated 7 August 1879 in French; the term 'Japonisme' was first used in 1872 by a Frenchman for the European, and particularly French, fascination with Japanese art after the opening of Japan to the West in 1858. I have seen other Baccarat vases with similar designs dating into the 1880's. I am very pleased to have this vase in my collection, and think I may need to find a small stand or table for it to have the place it deserves in my home!

That date is interesting too, I’d think. A wonderful (but fleeting) contrast to the industrial ugliness of the period.

Thanks Kevin; I think the date is wonderful - an exact day, long ago. I love that Baccarat dated their pieces like this; I have a file of dates like this one going back to 1869 so far.

so inspiring you know I adore birds, but the background with the greens and all the other colors makes you dream being in a forest

Hi kivatinitz, I love your description of a forest. The greens are very cooling in this vase, and are one of the reasons I like it so much - and the bird, of course! :)
