Hand colored etchings of these bizarre hunting scenes. The one using the trained leopard or cheetah is just amazing. They are hunting hares in both scenes, but they look much larger in one of them. ?? i did a bit of research in the short time i've had. I think these are 16th c etchings of a group of hunting scenes painted on the walls of a hunting lodge owned by the Medici family. These were done by Flemish artist Jan van der Straet, also known as Joannes Stradanus (1523- 1605). they are in these horrible 1950s frames which i will switch out as soon as i can get them done professionally.

      ho2cultcha, Fanstastic. :-)

Yeah, definitely not subsistance hunting. One of the hobbies of the rich.

I took a shot at trying to translate the text on the one with the hunting felines, and got this from Google Translate:

Non Lepores Canibus tantum, Saeuis quoque Pardis Sectari timidos Turcis magnabitus est mos.

It is the custom not only to hare hares to hounds, but also to follow the savage Leopards who are timid Turks.

I sure wouldn't want a leopard behind me on my saddle. Not to mention what the horse might think.

      Whoops, more:

      *snip*

      Engraver: Jan Campbell II (1561-1620)

Creator: stradanus (painter/designer draughtsman;; Italian; Flemish; Male; 1523-1605)

Between 1567 and 1577, Stradanus designed the cartoons for the Hunting Scene tapestry for Cosimo's villa at Poggio a Caiano, near Florence. The cartoons were so successful he did two more series, published as engravings by Antwerp printmakers.
