This Japanese tokanabe vase is 12.5" high x 6.5" at the widest point, stamped "MADE IN JAPAN" on the bottom. It is different from most tokanabe that I have seen as the sides are smooth, not rough and textured as normally seen. Some description call it "chalkware". but it is very different than American chalkware, thinner and seemingly harder.

I have been researching tokanabe ware lately and thought about buying when lo and behold, up pops this vase for $.99.

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tokanabe

"Tokanabe was mold-pressed pottery, made in Japan for the US market in the 1920s and 30s. It was distributed by the Sears Company in their catalogs between 1929 and 1930. No information is available on specific potters, painters, or manufacturers.

Tokanabe ware was typically black with a stippled texture and hand-painted raised relief designs. Some pieces were also produced in brown, gold or orange. It was stamped Nippon until 1921, when the US Congress passed legislation requiring all products manufactured in Japan for export to the United States to be marked Made in Japan."

Absolutely beautiful design, the pink bird on the black is really lovely

Thanks for your comments, Jenni! The pink is deeper than my image shows, sort of a salmon pink. Washed out by my lighting. This vase is considerably more conservative than most of these tokanabe vases.

Thanks for loving my tokanabe vase Manikin, CisumCisum, Jenni, Kevin, BHIFOS, dav2no1, PhilDMorris, vcal and fortapache!

i don,t know what is going on here , it looks out off tonality ( maybe discoloration
      or suffering )

this tonality is impossible to trace

wisteria design probably odds are up for early twenties maybe

Thanks apostata! I cannot find out much about this stuff. Most of it has a raised surface. These smooth vases are not so common.

Thanks for loving my vase Alfie21, jscott0363, Reise and Leelani!
