Weird thing looks like it is missing a base , we found this thing at a junk yard market and have absolutely no clue what it is. A friend was over and he said it look as if it possibly be trench art or maybe a spit tune

Ratjer than trench art I believe it's a trophy.

      Hi, Rbriggs. :-)

I tend to agree with vetraio50. It looks like a trophy, specifically of the variety known as a loving cup, e.g.:

Judging from the twine on the handles, somebody repurposed it as a hanging planter.

      Here's one that's been repurposed as a non-hanging planter:

Although, I suppose it could be a spittoon because of the wide, sloping rim (feeling a mite green around the gills as I write this).

Welcome to CW. I agree with vetraio50 and Kera. Its more likely than not a trophy.

And real spittoons don't look like this, reproductions are made of brass, but real ones look much different and are normally porcelain. I will have to post some for people to see.

Could also just be an urn as well. Similar to this one...

dav2no1, Yup, sometimes an urn is just an urn.

Also, if it had been a trophy, one might expect it to be engraved, unless it was unused stock. It might be leftover stock, because it's not quite symmetrical. Perhaps it was dropped.
