As to your thimble find: I am definitely not an expert.
Questions that come to mind are (1) was the thimble found on the surface of the ground, or below? (2) if it was below the surface, how deep?
Of course, even a modern thimble could have become buried quite easily (somebody loses one while moving, and then it becomes buried because of construction).
And yes, thimbles can be modern. You can buy a brand new one at your local sewing goods store, or on Amazon.
