This little pottery sauce pot is 3" high x 3.5" in diameter. It has a mark in Japanese on the bottom and what I think is an exporter/importer's label (Nakagama).
I found it on an online auction site and it is such an odd little pot and very inexpensive so wanted to get a closer look at it. The lid is deeply recessed into the pot, surrounded by a high collar. It appears to have been hand-made and painted. The design on two sides is the same and kind of looks to me like someone juggling three differently colored rings or balls. All of the colors on the pot are very vibrant, but somewhat washed out by my lighting. The lid has a vent hole. The interior of the pot and lid are dark gray in color, thickly glazed. There is no strainer built into the pot.
It finally occurred to me that this is a sauce pot! Some examples of other Japanese sauce pots:

Thanks for your efforts Waki! I appreciate it! found a couple of other pots with a similar configuration so it is a "thing" but I cannot figure out what that thing is. If I do, I will update this post.

Hmmm. Maybe it is a sauce pot, not a teapot? I have several sauce pots but I do not think they have holes in the lids. I will have to check them to see.
All of my sauce pots have holes in their lids, too, so now pretty sure this is a sauce pot. Most sauce pots have a spout which is more hook shaped, maybe to prevent launching sauce across the table...
tea pot --tare--- pourer ?tea pot shape shoyu--(usukuchi) or dark (koikuchi).
credits are yours , you did the heavy lifting
3 inchis probably shoyu ?
Thx! I feel kind of stoopid, now, since I have several sauce pots. None are in this shape, though. Once I figured it out, I found several in this shape. Luckily, I am a senior citizen and in 15 minutes I will not remember any of this.
Yes, I vote for shoyu...
