This crucifix is 14" high x 10" wide. The bronze is 9" high x 8" wide. I assume it is bronze as it is not magnetic, is quite heavy, the part of the back that I can see is cast and shows yellow/gold when scratched. The cross is made of two 1.75" x .75" pieces of oak.
Not sure if this is "mission style" or "deco style" or is a mix of the two. Not sure of age, but it appears to be of very good quality, though I think if it was super high quality, the cross would have been made of one piece of wood instead of two pieces with an obvious clash of grain directions. Still, pretty nice work, I think. Not going to dismount it to see if it has a foundry mark on back.
Some sort of clear coating has been applied to the bronze to protect the finish. It has been worn or scraped off in a couple of places and is starting to darken there. Not sure if I should try to seal those places, or not. It might be tricky to do so, not knowing what was used to coat it.
It was metal day at the thrift shop today, with this crucifix, a copper sheet on slate and two file boxes. I actually went to look for a couple of small tables but found nothing appropriate.
I am not religious, am in fact an atheist, but have several pieces of religious art in my collection because.....it is art! And only $.99.
