On May 10, 1808, Johann Wolfgang von Goethe had a passport issued in Weimar as he intended to travel to Carlsbad. This document has been preserved in the poet's extensive and well-stocked archives.
A single-sheet passport - an official form in German and French. With its dimensions of 34 cm in height and 42 cm in width, the paper does not appear to be very handy, which is why it has been folded several times to a convenient small format.
The form, filled out with handwritten information about the Privy Council, bears the signature of the Weimar State Police President Carl Wilhelm von Fritsch and the seal of the "HERZOGL. S. LANDES POLICEY COLLEGIUM". Goethe also signed it with his own hand - in German and French.
A significant document of German (passport) history.
