CDV view of a member of the 11th Indiana Infantry.
The 11th Indiana was a Zouave Regiment that was raised by Lew Wallace. They wore distinctive uniforms as exhibited in the cdv.
Ink inscription on the front shows that the soldier is Will Boyce of Company A. Boyce enlisted in August of 1861– fought at Donelson, Shiloh, Champion Hill and Vicksburg before the Regiment was transferred east.
In September of 1864, Boyce was wounded at Winchester and succumbed to his wounds about a week later.
General Lew Wallace became a Major General during the war, but he is probably best known as the author of Ben Hur (1880).
