A mystery item?
Howdy all. Does anyone have any suggestions as to what this may be?
It was found in the Forest in south western Cook County, Illinois
It's made of wood, probably a branch remnant, about 1.5" diameter, with metal bands near the tapered end.
It's about 8" long
It seems to have some age
Pretty interesting..at first I was thinking part of a bow drill for starting fires, but seems thick. Maybe a handle for a hatchet?
dav2no1 - thanks for the suggestion. This could be part of a bow drill That could make sense as the area has a history of early Native Americans and early French Explorers.
was it near a beaver dam?
Hello sam66.
Thanks for the note
This was not near a beaver dam. it was in a wooded area. So far, the bow drill seems to be a common response.
why are the metal bands the same color, have the same grain markings as the bark and are not corroded? Any native American item would have rotted away long ago especially in the climate of the area where it was found.
