Hello sam66. Thanks for the note This was not near a beaver dam. it was in a wooded area. So far, the bow drill seems to be a common response.
dav2no1 - thanks for the suggestion. This could be part of a bow drill That could make sense as the area has a history of early Native Americans and early French Explorers.

Hello aghcollect. Yes, the machine slides back and forth on the rails. The rails also have wheels on the back side (not visible in the photo) that allow the rail and device to roll left & right
