Howdy, Can anyone help out with this mystery? This was in with a lot of surveying tools/ I'm trying to figure out what it is.
This is real heavy, probably about 30 lbs. It is 42” long, extends to 54”
    Any ideas?
    Thanks,
    G

One leg of a tripod?? Just a guess!!

That is similar to what I was thinking. I was thinking it was an extension for a survey stick. Since the top looks like something attaches to it.

Thanks for the suggestions, but I think this is way to heavy to be a tripod leg or survey stick extension. I just added a few more pictures showing the 2 ends. The silver shaft slides in and out and looks like it would tighten down on something since there is a threaded side hole and a key hanging on the shaft. It almost acts like a dent puller with the heavy weight of the red part, but way too cumbersome for pulling dents.

Howdy bobby725, that's a good suggestion. Maybe a weight to attach to the underside center of a tripod to help it hold steady. I'll investigate that possibility
      Thanks

Mystery Solved! This is a Soil Penetrometer. Used for soil testing for construction standards and other testing.
Thanks all for the various suggestions

Hello, What is the diameter of you widget, and is it made from a lead alloy?
    7. Grayfur1, 4 years ago
Hello Izenglish, The diameter is approx. 2.5" - I don't know what type of metal it is made of,
      Regards
